Which AI Model Should I Actually Use?

You know ChatGPT. Maybe you've heard of Claude or Gemini. But there are hundreds of AI models, and more appear every month. This guide cuts through the noise: what actually matters for your business, when model choice changes outcomes, and the one 10-minute exercise that teaches more than any article.

You have more AI model options than you think

You know ChatGPT. Maybe you've heard of Claude or Gemini too. That's three. There are hundreds of AI models available right now, and more appear every month. Some are better at writing. Some are faster. Some are cheaper. Some run on your own computer instead of sending your data to a server in California. The model you use changes what you can do, what it costs, and who can see your data. Most business owners don't know they have options. You do.

The real question is not which model is best

The question you are really asking is not which model is best. It is whether you are making a mistake by just using ChatGPT. The answer is usually no, you are not making a mistake. But you should understand what you are using and when something else might be worth trying.

What ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, and Ollama actually are

ChatGPT is a chat interface to a model made by OpenAI. Claude is a chat interface to a model made by Anthropic. Gemini is Google's. DeepSeek is a Chinese model that caused a stir earlier this year because it matched the quality of the big American models at a fraction of the development cost. Open-source models are different. These are models you can download and run yourself. The best known way to do this right now is with a tool called Ollama. It lets you run capable models on a laptop or a server you control.

For most businesses, the workflow matters more than the model

For most businesses, the model matters less than the workflow around it. If you use ChatGPT to draft emails, summarize documents, or brainstorm ideas, and it works, you are fine. The real value comes from learning how to use one model well. You learn what it is good at and where it fails. You build prompts that get consistent results. You develop judgment about when to trust the output and when to check it. Switching models every week because someone on the internet said the new one is better wastes that learning time.

When model choice actually matters

There are three situations where the model choice actually matters.

Privacy and compliance

The first is privacy and compliance. If you are working with client contracts, medical records, or anything covered by GDPR, sending that data to a third-party server may not be allowed. In that case you want a model that runs on your own infrastructure. Ollama makes this possible.

Cost at scale

The second situation is cost at scale. If you are processing thousands of documents a day or generating content for a website, the per-token pricing of the big models adds up. A local model or a cheaper alternative can change the economics.

Specialized tasks

The third situation is specialized tasks. Some models are noticeably better at coding, some at structured reasoning, some at creative writing. If you have a narrow use case and the current model is consistently disappointing, trying a different one is reasonable.

A simple way to compare models

If you are using ChatGPT and it meets your needs, you are fine. The one thing worth doing is a simple comparison. Take a prompt you use regularly, something you have already refined. Run it in ChatGPT. Then run the same prompt in Claude. Look at the differences. One might be clearer. One might follow your instructions more precisely. One might add details you did not ask for. That ten-minute exercise will teach you more about what actually matters than any article or benchmark. You will know whether switching is worth your time.

The system matters more than the tool

The model is a tool. The system you build around it is what determines whether AI helps your business or just adds noise. Most businesses spend too much time choosing the tool and too little time designing the system. That is the mistake to avoid.
